Koiteli is a unique, nearly natural area of rapids in Oulu, Kiiminki district, only about 25 kilometers from the city center in the direction of Kuusamo and a provincially valuable tourist attraction with cultural and historical importance. The area’s scenic value is formed by riverbeds, rapids, small islands, shores and nature.

It is estimated that around 80,000 visitors visit Koiteli every year. In Koiteli, you can experience the beauty of nature, hike swim, fish, relax by the riverside outcrops or enjoy a picnic. The roaring rapids provide unforgettable experiences for kayakers and white water rafters.

LOCATION

Kiiminki is located only about 25 kilometers from the center of Oulu.

By car, you can reach Koiteli by taking the Oulu-Kuusamo highway number 20. At the traffic lights in the center of Kiiminki, turn towards Ylikiiminki and Koitelinkoski. The sign ‘Koitelinkosket 4 km’ leads you there and the main parking area is located on the left side of the road.

The second route runs from the north side of the center of Kiiminki along Purontie (road no. 18717). Drive about 5 km until you see a small sign pointing to Pohjois-Koiteli to the right. From the parking lot, it is about a 300-meter walk to Sahasaari. Please note that there is only a small parking area on this side.
By bicycle, the ride from Kiiminki to Koiteli takes about 20 minutes.

SERVICES

You can fish, go kayaking, swim, build a campfire or just enjoy the nature and the white waters of the rapids. During the summer, there is an ice cream stall on the mainland, and in Sahasaari a café called Koitelin Tunnelmatupa. As the nature in Koiteli is sensitive, please respect its nature values.

  • Take your trash and cigarette butts to the bins, and the bottles and cans with you when you leave.
  • Stay on marked trails and build fires only on designated campfire sites. There are seven campfire sites that can be freely used.
  • Firewood can be picked up from the woodshed at the main parking area.
  • Toilets are near the main parking area and in Sahasaari during the opening hours of Tunnelmatupa.

 

Koiteli Elää ry, was founded to revitalize the cultural life in the region. The association’s most significant event is a music festival called Koiteli Elää which is also called the most beautiful festival in Finland #suomenkauneinfestival.

Go Arctic Events organizes white water rafting and swimming and a large variety of program services in Koiteli. The company also operates Tunnelmatupa café, Uittokämppä lodge for meetings and small parties and Koskikippari sauna.

Koiteli Residence offers cozy accommodation as well as well-equipped meeting rooms and a sauna. This is a great place to arrange all kinds of events from business meetings to parties and family gatherings.
